Sad news for us

August 19th, 2006 at 08:19 pm

My dad went for a colonscopy on Weds. On thurs. they called with the results. He has colon cancer. This is his 3rd time. They said that is extremely rare and that he must carry the gene for the cell. He first got it when he was 38 and then 4 yrs later. He is now 63. They want my dad to have ileostomy where they remove the large intestine so that this will not happen again. The doctor said the surgery will be hard as my dad is overweight, has lots of scar tissue from before, and hernias. His surgery is this thursday. My poor sister is moving to NC on tuesday and she is beside herself w/ guilt and grief. I did warn her this could happen when she told us she was going to move but it is too late now as they already bought a home. I am making dinner and cupcakes and bringing them to her house tonight and helping her pack. Of course she will be there for the surgery and unfortunately miss her daughters first day of 1st grade. Please pray for my family.

Will your dad be having a "j-pouch" surgery or be using an ostomy bag? (J-pouch--or W-pouch or S-pouch, depending on slight variations) is where they take the lower part of the small intestine and turn it into an internal pouch so that afterwards one can go to the bathroom as usual. I've had one for 6 years and am very thankful for my return to good health as a consequence. Does your Dad go online at all? There are some wonderfully helpful online support sites--there's j-pouch.org and ostomyinternational.org and CCFA.org (crohns/colitis foundation) probably has some forums too. This is one case where online forums are particularly helpful because one can discuss with ease and often humor issues that one just doesn't want to talk about with others because of embarrassment.

Good luck to your Dad and your family at this difficult time.

You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. My mother who is 57 has been bleeding for the past month and I keep telling her to get it checked out. She is due for a colonoscopy soon to find out the real cause. I pray that it isn't anything serious, but she is such a stubborn woman!

Still we love our parents. I lost two brothers before I turned 21 in car accidents and it was a very difficult time. I wish I had time to tell them how much I loved them and spend time with them before they left. You have time still so please cherish every moment.

    God bless.

Thank you so much for all your comments and prayers. Elissa my dad is probably going to end up with an eliostomy (I think that is how its spelled) or a colectomy. He will have his large intestine removed entirely. He is anxious right now and we are trying to keep him preoccupied. Today all the guys (my DH, BIL, and myFIL) took him for a walk at a state hunting park. Tonight we are grilling out. His CT scan is Tuesday and Wedns. he has to prep and thurs. is his surgery. I will keep everyone posted.

I just got home from a week away-or I would have posted a reply much sooner. My thoughts are sure with your dad and your family. It is so stressful on the whole family when someone is seriously ill. I am hoping all goes well with the upcoming surgery.
